- Creating Product Instructions: A Step-by-Step Guide
- 1. Go to the Operations module.
- 2. Within the Inventory section under the Cataloging menu, click on the ‘Product Instructions’ tab.
- 3. Click on the “Add” icon on the top right to add new instructions.
- 4. Under the ‘Product Instruction Details’ section select if you want to apply this instruction for either ‘Product’ or ‘Material’. Then enter the name for the product instruction you wish to add. It is recommended that the Instruction names should be unique so that it will be easier to identify and select the instructions in associated functions.
- 5. Product instructions come with five pre-built categories: global, message, joiners, preparation, and additions. Choose a specific category for the product instruction from one of these options.
- 6. Associate the business location where you wish to link the product instruction.
- 7. Enter the product instruction description in the provided field. This field is optional. Check the flag below the description ‘Include description in customer invoice’ if you want to include this description in the invoice every time you add this instruction in Quotes or Jobs.
- 8. Pricing setup is not applicable for instruction belonging to the ‘Global’, ‘Joiners’, and ‘Message’ categories. It is only applicable for instruction belonging to the ‘Preparation’ and ‘Additions’ category. If the cost setup is applicable, set up the cost if any, and select the corresponding ‘Tax Class’.
- 9. Enable this production instruction by setting the toggle on the top right to ‘Yes’. Only the enabled instructions can be used in the functions. Once the above details are filled, click on the ‘Save’ button on the top right to save and add the instructions to your business.
Product Instructions
Product instruction’s primary function is to help add specific instructions to a product that require custom attention to be communicated. Instructions can be applied to products or materials. The default picker is products.
Attached Services are products that can be customized, like choosing to engrave an item you order.
For example: You may offer a hockey jersey that comes in various colors and sizes but also allows you to customize the name and number on it. In this case, the jersey would be considered to have both variations with added instructions. However, as far as the SKU is concerned, you would identify this item as a product variation.
Note: Product instructions are for the product added to the Ordering Cart
Instructions are defined in the business as part of the inventory with the following five categories:
- Global
- Joiners
- Message
- Preparation
- Additions
Building Your Instruction Set
Combinational Instructions
Combinational instructions work collectively by combining ‘Global’ and ‘Joiner’ together to give flexibility to your instruction set.
Global – Instruction Set
Instruction sets in ‘Global’ are mostly action verbs and elements that start the instruction. For example, words could be: bring, send, contain, buy, show, take, tell, verify, check, get, wash, finalize, lay, lend, offer, edit, make, come, respond, run, arrive, continue, go, No, Add, With, Extra, Rush, Don’t, Make, Do
Joiner – Instruction Set
Joiners are mostly words related to businesses’ main products for catering which may be: Sour Cream, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Olives, Peppers, Pista, Plain Nuts, Potato, Tomato, Tutti-Frutti, Vanilla, Veggie, Meats, Shrimp, and Vegetables.

These are quick messages that businesses can attach to a product(s) – they are simple to add and
Preparation – Instruction Set
Focused on how you would like to prepare your product for your customers. This functionality is used when you are uniquely customizing your customer orders. Depending on your business needs, preparation could be thought of as – putting together, producing, building, arranging, developing, assembling, constructing, composing, etc.
Preparation can have flat pricing that you can add to the product you are selling.
Some examples are building wooden crates, painting black, Preparing for storms, etc.
Additions – Instruction Set
Focused on whether you like to add anything to your product for your customers. This functionality is used when you are uniquely customizing your customer orders. You can use addition as additional charges. Some examples are Smart switches to an electronic board.
Preparation can have flat pricing that you can add to the product you are selling.
Some examples are adding LED lights, Adding a higher DB horn, Adding engraving, etc.
Instructions with Cost & Taxes
Cost is not mandatory in setup, but taxes become mandatory when the cost is applied to instructions.
Instructions can be applied for the entire quantity or per each quantity of a single product.
Taxes are applied based on the tax classification applied to the product setup. Tax classification setup is configured in ‘Sales Taxes’ under ‘Setup’. The tax class applied to the product is applicable to the SKUs under that product.
Applying Instructions in Quotes and Jobs
Users can apply instructions to a single product or multiple products at the same time. Users can remove instructions individually per product. Instructions are shown in the product cart, summary, and invoice.

Case of joiners – Joiners and pricing of joiners remain the same. It gets added to the product and multiplied with quantity. For example, Extra Cheese is $0.25 per item, for 300 items, extra cheese will be $75.
